As the sun descended and the amber light rest upon our faces we drove
out of the stake center parking lot. With our bellies grubbing from the
soon to be sustenance, our minds wandered to the burnt hot dogs and or
tin foil dinners we will soon be consuming. An hour later we arrived at
our destination where our goal will be to survive. Survive the night
with scouts talking till 1am or the hot dog dropped in the dirt and
brushed off before consuming... okay the last part didn't happen but you
can imagine if it did. Okay back to the story. So there we were, 4
adults and about 10 scouts ready to concur the wilderness for one night.
We then put our tents, ate and went to bed. Just kidding. The scouts
spent the next hour and half putting up 1 tent. Their ability to focus
on that task was not on their minds. Survival in the rugged wilderness
was. Finally they were able to get their tent assembled. Now how do we
squeeze 10 scouts into an 8 man tent. There was no doubt this challenge
would be conquered and it was! Later in the dark cold evening we stood
around the campfire that brought us warmth. We feasted on our meals. Many
thanks were given those those parents at home that had worked so hard on
preparing them. They were delicious. Bro. Sharp created his version of a
massive torch of which warmed our hearts, clothes and dried our tear
from the pure awesomeness it emitted. We then slept, sort of. We made an
epic breakfast that consisted of eggs, bacon, sausage and packages. To
help wash it down they consumed milk and orange juice. Only the most
grand breakfast was worthy of these fine scouts. After we packed up, a
football game ascended upon the campgroud. It was a close match with
minor injuries to pride and knees. We ALL arrived home, a better parent, scout and leaders! We had conquered Oak Flat!
